This copier is designed to work with any camera and lens combination (as long as your camera allows standard threaded devices to be attached). The copier screws onto the end of the lens or adapter -- just like a filter -- allowing the camera to produce digital images from traditional 35mm slides.

Your camera must accept threaded devices to use this copier; if your camera or adapter accepts threaded devices, but the size is not 52mm, you will need to purchase the appropriate adapters and/or stepping rings. We don't include adapters or stepping rings with this item; they must be purchased separately according to your camera's needs. Please see your camera's manual to determine what may be necessary to arrive at a 52mm thread size. If you need a special adapter and need to choose between wide-angle and telephoto versions, choose the telephoto (longer) adapter to use with this copier.

"Technical" Information

Detailed instructions are included to help ensure that you obtain the highest quality images.

This copier includes, and is precisely integrated with a professional quality, high definition +10 macro close-up lens. This lens can be used separately from the copier on your camera - just unscrew the lens from the copier and screw it onto your camera's lens or adapter.

You can use various light sources to illuminate your slides or film. For instance, point your camera, with the slide copier attachment installed, towards: the sky, a light box, a light bulb, or point your camera at a white wall (or white paper taped to a wall) and use your camera's flash.

Depending upon your camera's zoom range, the digital image produced will completely fill the frame at about 100mm** zoom, or zoom over 100mm and trim or crop the image as desired. Confine SLR (removable lens) cameras to around 80-105mm zoom range for best results. **Please see lens discussion for more in-depth information.

The bottom line: this device allows you to obtain excellent results when copying 35mm slides or film with your digital camera, camcorder, movie camera or 35mm SLR. It is very sturdily built, and will give you years of service with minimal care.

Alternatives and Exceptions...

There are a few cameras that function exceptionally well with our standard copier devices due to their inherent superior macro capability. For these cameras, we suggest that you use our standard copier instead of this Bower Universal Pro model. Our standard copier costs significantly less since it relies upon your camera's own internal macro capability and doesn't include the Hoya Macro Close-Up Lens. The standard model has the same functionality and benefits as this Pro model, minus the Hoya lens. The only cameras that we are currently aware of that fall into this category are Nikon Coolpix camera models 8700, 5700, 8400, 5400, 5000, 4500, 4300, 995, 990, 950, 885, 880.

There are other cameras that function very well with our standard device, however they leave a border around the edge of the image since their macro magnification is not quite powerful enough to fill the frame. If you have a large number of slides to copy, we suggest that you may want to use this (Professional) model instead of using one of our standard models since the images will generally require additional editing in your camera or PC if you want to crop off the border. If however, you have a smaller number of slides or are searching for a more economical choice, the standard model may perfectly suit your needs. Customers have reported copying hundreds of slides with our standard models. The very fine cameras that we provide copiers for that fall into this category are specific models of Sony CyberShot and Sony Mavica cameras.

This copier must be connected to the filter thread end of a lens for proper functioning - the copier does not connect directly to the body of the camera. I wish there were a simple formula for determining whether or not a given camera/lens will work properly with the copier, however, I have found it to be a bit of a frustrating mystery with no clear answers. The paragraph below is our best shot at trying to lay this out as best we can, though it is admittedly and unfortunately lacking in precision. You should select a lens that has 80-150mm of focal length within it's range to use with the copier, as around 100-150mm will fill the camera's frame with the image of a slide using this copier. However, some lenses won't focus - like a Canon 55-250, Sigma 70-300mm, Nikon 55-200 DX. A Canon 18-55, will focus properly and will fill a good amount of the frame, however, it will not fill the entire frame. It is unfortunately unknown if any given particular camera/lens combination will focus properly and fill the frame. A Canon 18-135 works great - fills the frame and focuses properly. It appears that the zoom lenses that start on the lower mm end will focus properly, and the ones that start at 50mm or higher may not. It is unknown if fixed or prime focal length lenses will focus or fill the frame. This focal length range is as measured in 35mm equivalency terms. If you don't know the focal length of your lens in 35mm terms, you will need to convert it with a multiplier specific to your camera/sensor combination. This is a multiplying factor that relates your camera�s true focal length to its 35mm equivalent value. We have provided the multiplier, where known, in the table above, next to the camera model in the form (m=1.5x). The focal length multiplier should also be printed in your camera's owner�s manual. Commonly this multiplier is about 1.5x, and if this is the case, a 100mm lens will be equivalent to a 150mm lens on a 35mm camera (multiply 100 x 1.5). A 28-90mm lens would translate to 42-135mm.	An adapter, if necessary, depends upon the lens that you choose to use with the copier. After you've selected the lens that you would like to use with the copier, the next question is, what is the filter thread size on that lens? The copier has 52mm threads, so if the filter thread size on the chosen lens is 62mm, you will need a 62-52mm step-down adapter. If the thread size on the chosen lens is 46mm, you will need a 46-52mm step-up adapter. Very large or very small sizes may require two adapters: for instance, 72mm filter threads will require 72-58mm and 58-52mm step-down adapters. You will need whatever adapters are necessary to get from the filter thread size on the chosen lens to the target size of 52mm for the copier. If the thread size on the lens is 52mm you wont need to use an adapter. We carry a selection of standard adapters for your convenience, and they are widely available elsewhere.
